Executive function
Body doubling: borrow the focus you can't summon alone
Body doubling means doing a task alongside someone else so their presence supplies the structure and accountability your brain has trouble making on its own. Here is why it works, and how to get the effect even when nobody is around.
The idea in one line
Tasks that feel impossible alone become doable when someone else is simply present. That is body doubling. The other person does not coach you or do the work — they just create a shared sense of “we are doing this now,” and that is often enough to get an ADHD brain moving.
Why it works
Executive function is partly the ability to generate your own structure: to decide it is time, hold the plan in mind, and resist drifting. When that is unreliable, an outside presence fills the gap. Body doubling gives you three things for free:
- A start signal — 'we are beginning now' is easier to accept than deciding alone
- Gentle accountability — you are less likely to wander off with someone there
- A container — a clear sense of when the focused time begins and ends
A body double that's always available: the timer
You do not always have a person on hand. A timer supplies the same container: a defined stretch of “we are doing this now, for this long.” It is a starting line, not a deadline to beat. When it ends, you are free to stop — and often you will not want to, because the hard part was starting.
Every reset on this site includes an optional focus timer built for this. Pick 5, 10, 15, or 25 minutes, start it alongside your checklist, and let it hold the space. You can pause, add five minutes if you catch momentum, or call it done for now with no guilt. There is optional soft brown noise, too, for a bit more “someone is here” texture.
Start a reset with the built-in body double.
Open any reset, tap a timer duration, and work alongside it. Stop when it stops — done for now counts.
