How to clean a microwave.

The easy way: steam first, wipe second, and stop. Stuck-on food loosens on its own when you give it a few minutes of moisture, so the whole job becomes a quick reset instead of a scrub session.

Why steam first

A microwave interior is mostly food splatter that heat has baked onto the walls. Scrubbing cold splatter is hard and slow. Steam loosens it in two minutes with almost no effort, and the rest is just wiping. This is the ADHD-friendly version of microwave cleaning because the hard part is done by the microwave, not you.

Supplies that help

None of these are required. A bowl of water and a cloth covers most cleans.

  • A microwave-safe bowl that holds about a cup of water
  • Microfiber cloth or two for streak-free wiping
  • Mild dish soap on the cloth for greasy spots
  • Optional: white vinegar or half a lemon for odor
  • Optional: a microwave steam cleaner accessory for heavier messes

Before you start

Unplug the microwave only if you plan to clean the buttons aggressively or if your hands are wet. For a normal steam reset, leaving it plugged in is fine. Move anything sitting on top of the microwave so you can wipe up there too. The top is the most-forgotten surface in any kitchen.

Minimum win

If today is hard, do these three things and call it done.

  • Steam a bowl of water for two minutes
  • Wipe the inside with a damp microfiber
  • Wipe the handle and the buttons

Step-by-step method

This is the whole routine. Five to ten minutes of real work.

  • Fill a microwave-safe bowl with about a cup of water. Add vinegar or lemon if you want to deodorize.
  • Microwave it on high for two minutes. Heavy splatter? Leave the door closed for another minute after the timer.
  • Carefully remove the warm bowl. Steam is hot and the bowl will be hot too.
  • Wipe the ceiling of the microwave first, then the back wall, then the side walls. Top down keeps drips from re-soiling clean spots.
  • Wipe the door (both sides) and the inside of the door rim.
  • Take out the turntable and the support ring. Rinse the turntable in the sink. Most glass turntables are dishwasher safe but check your manual.
  • Wipe the turntable area before putting it back. Dry with a clean cloth.
  • Wipe the outside door, handle, and buttons with a multi-surface or disinfecting wipe. Dry with a microfiber.
  • Wipe the top of the microwave, then the counter around it.

If you only have 5 minutes

Skip the turntable wash. Skip the outside. Just steam, wipe the inside, and close the door. The next reset can pick up the rest. Five minutes of progress is real progress.

If you have more energy

  • Run a second steam cycle with vinegar water for stubborn odor
  • Wipe the vent filter if your microwave has one over the stove
  • Clean the cabinet front above the microwave
  • Take out anything from the fridge that smells, since odors travel

What to avoid

  • Steel wool or harsh abrasive pads on the interior
  • Bleach sprays inside the microwave
  • Heavy scrubbing on the door window or the control panel
  • Putting metal anything (foil, twist ties) back in to test it
  • Cleaning sprays not rated for food contact surfaces

Multi-surface and disinfecting wipes are great for the exterior, the handle, and the buttons. They are not the right primary method for the interior, which touches food. Water plus a microfiber is usually enough.

How to keep it easier next time

  • Cover food with a paper towel or a vented lid in the microwave
  • Wipe inside the microwave the same day a splatter happens, while it is still soft
  • Keep microfiber cloths in the kitchen, not in the laundry room or the basement
  • Run a steam reset once a month, even when it looks fine
